It’s really easy to get colors right. It’s really hard to get black – and neutrals – right. Black is certainly a color but it’s also an illusion. I’m a fashion designer and people think, what do I know? I like things simple. The key to my collections is sensuality. Fashion to me has become very disposable; I wanted to get back to craft, to clothes that could last.
I try as much as possible to give you a great basic product and what comes out, I feel, is really amazing. The great thing about fashion is that it always looks forward. It should be natural, and that’s how I like women to look. I like them to feel comfortable and look organic. You have to always work against what you did before, and even against your taste. I remember walking the dog one day, I saw a car full of teenage girls, and one of them rolled down the window and yelled, ‘Marc Jacobs!’ in a French accent.
